Maths in practice

Instructions:

The students work together in small groups and use their functional maths skills to calculate and measure the following in their local environment: The playground area in m2, the cubic meter of the playhouse, the circumference of the sandbox, the swing frame’s height and the slope of the bike sheds roof.

Variation:

In a cross/curricular activity with physical education maths can be used in the following:

  • Measure the length and height of your own long jump or vertical jump.
  • Measure your own speed in relation to distance and time.
  • Measure the difference of your pulse before and after running. Find the class’s average resting heart rate and working heart rate.
  • Measure the average/percentage/statistics of the amount of shots on goal, goals, saves, free kicks, corner kicks etc. in different ball games.
